I would like to use Bluesky. They’ve done a bunch of seriously interesting technical work on moderation and ranking that I truly admire, and I’ve got lots of friends there who really enjoy it.

But I’m not on Bluesky and I don’t have any plans to join it anytime soon. I wrote about this in 2023: I will never again devote my energies to building up an audience on a platform whose management can sever my relationship to that audience at will

If you add all the #TwitterAlternative s, they have been in the lead for a while now.

If you add @Flipboard and sum it up wit #Mastodon (because #Fediverse 😉), then #Facebook ist not far.

But, if you have a look on the numbers since the beginning of 2022, then it's clear, that this is mainly a story about the decline of #Twitter.

I have for the last 11 years talked about the problem with user profiling and algorithmic content. Creation of echo chambers and the ability to easily manipulate what people see for marketing purposes and worse. Even made a cat video to try to make the point. I wish more would see this.

The point is not for political parties to see the potential here, but rather to see the risk. The only way to fix this is to ban user profiling.

You have made a good choice to move the the Fediverse. It would help for more of your friends to join us.

@pluralistic has made clear that #SwitchingCosts are a major impediment to big name accounts leaving #twitter, #Facebook, #YouTube, etc.

But, there are also #NotSwitchingCosts for refusing to adopt #fedi

For example, I've stopped all donations to my favorite #blog sites that continue to maintain #CSM accounts and cross post corporate cancer.

@pfefferle I look forward to seeing this federated future! Ironically, the main reason I signed up with @wordpressdotcom was because of the #ActivityPub plugin.

I think with a few tweaks, #WordPress could become the super app within the #Fediverse.

I do hope the #BuddyPress & #bbPress teams jump on board, as greater ActivityPub integration could help rejuvenate these social WordPress “projects” (as they would provide competitive balance against #Facebook & #Reddit).

The update for #Mastodon patching the bug in the preview is near, so it's time for a last look at #traffic sources for @heiseonline:
#Twitter keeps decreasing and is already overtaken by Mastodon (thx also to problems with our bot for #X, when it works, X brings more people).
#Flipboard and #Facebook are growing again, #Bluesky and #Threads are far behind. But Threads brings already more traffic than Bluesky, although we can't autopost (every link) there.

After the takeover by #Facebook, the platform became increasingly commercialized. More and more #advertising moved onto the platform. Algorithms, which were trained on the basis of the posts viewed, determined what was displayed in our timeline.

Pixelfed wants to pick up on the original spirit of Instagram and focus on #photography, but also address modern developments such as #stories in the form of videos. 📸

Algorithms that analyze user behavior are completely dispensed with. Protecting user #privacy is an important feature of Pixelfed. 🛡️
