@pluralistic The figures given for the energy storage capacity of mineshafts may be a bit optimistic. According to the article on gravity storage on wikipedia:

the 530m mine shaft in Finland would need a weight of about 1400 tons to store 2 MWh. Sand or rock density is about 2.5, so this is a cube of about 8,5m on each side (a large building) and the system needs cables to lift that over 500m.
