I have been radicalized tonight by listening to Kelly Brotzman, @pluralistic and Leah Johnson talk at the Boston Public Library about the right to read and book censorship. I really liked an explanation by Cory on the role of Sci-Fi and comics, genres historically used as experimental playgrounds and vehicles for more daring ideas, but also targets of vicious censorship. And because they are genres that "nobody takes seriously", rare are the people who stand up for them when needed.

Kelly Brotzman is engaged in bringing books, textbooks and education to people in prisons. She provided appalling examples of the arbitrary book censorship operating in prisons (you will never see true crime, back-wood survival, or "violent" comic books in a prison for example), and gave a moving plea for treating people in prisons as people with their own individuality and the right to read and learn.
