Last was "Chokepoint Capitalism" by Rebecca Giblin and @pluralistic, who weave together research from economics and antitrust law with insights from case studies on a variety of creative industries to paint a stark picture of the failings of the Chicago School of antitrust and illustrate how modern platforms have significantly increased their power at the expense of worker earnings and innovation. Highly recommend

Post, the new platform, has a major problem.
It’s trying to build a monopoly on news payments. It looks like it’s aiming to be the “Uber of news.”

Do we really want to do that?? (No. )

New from me, on Substack.

Let’s skip Post. It’s not going to be good for users, news outlets, or democracy. Mastodon is a better choice.

FTC Chair Lina Khan is making it easier for the public to weigh in on proposed mergers.

"It's a priority for Chair Khan and the FTC to hear not just from attorneys, industry & trade associations but from people, because we all have a stake in fair competition!"

"“the cost of 40 years of pro-monopoly can't be ignored. Monopolies make the whole world more brittle, even as the cost of that brittleness mounts. It's hard to pretend monopolies are fine when a single hurricane can wipe out the entire country's supply of IV fluid – again:”"

The courts are clear: Google is a monopolist. But will that monopoly be effectively curtailed?

The ruling has been celebrated as a new dawn for the internet, but there are plenty of reasons to believe Google’s power may not be reined in as much as we hope. The fight is far from over.

What happens when #antitrust worldwide is too weak, and the largest organizations rely on a handful of contracting giants?

#IT#Outage and future catastrophes as when one company goes offline, it cascades across all sectors. Companies like Crowdstrike, Microsoft are, in the words of @pluralistic: "too big to care" to fix things. Improving reliability simply is an unnecessary expense when they know customers will keep running to them, since there's little choice.

@pluralistic , thanks for highlighting the Biden admin's important initiatives reinvigorating US competition enforcement.
