Excellent article from @pluralistic on @fsfe take on #Apple under the #DMA

FSFE’s brief makes a series of legal arguments, rebutting Apple’s self-serving theories about what the DMA really means. FSFE shoots down Apple’s tired argument that copyrights and patents override any interoperability requirements. U.S. courts have been inconsistent on this issue, but we’re hopeful that the Court of Justice of the E.U. will reject the “intellectual property trump card.”

Even more importantly, FSFE makes moral and technical arguments about the importance of safeguarding the technological self-determination of users by letting them choose free software, and about why this is as safe – or safer – than giving Apple a veto over its customers’ software choices.

#AI#GenerativeAI#OpenAI #Nvidia#Apple#Microsoft: "Nvidia Corp., the world’s biggest chipmaker, has discussed joining a funding round for OpenAI that would value the artificial intelligence startup at more than $100 billion, according to people familiar with the matter.

Apple Inc. and Microsoft Corp. also have been in talks about participating in the financing, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the deliberations are private. The round would be led by Thrive Capital, which is investing about $1 billion, Bloomberg reported earlier this week. Nvidia has discussed investing about $100 million, two of the people said.

If the discussions move forward, it would mean the three most valuable tech companies are all backing OpenAI, maker of the groundbreaking ChatGPT chatbot. Microsoft was already OpenAI’s biggest funder, having invested roughly $13 billion."

Every artist, performer and creator on Patreon is about to get screwed out of 30% of their gross revenue, which will be diverted to Apple, the most valuable company on the planet. Apple contributes nothing to their work, but it will get to steal a third of their wages:

Nobody is forcing #Patreon to use #Apple’s #AppStore

They can use the web and end the controversy.

If they find value in AppStore that they don’t in a web app, they should say so and still end the controversy.

The controversy is ginned up by people who want to take advantage of a platform that Apple created but don’t want to share the cost.

Before there was App Store, and before there were even native APIs, developers built “apps” for the web, and they still work on iPhone.

#Apple has completed the transformation from #Cult to #Cartel and more people reading this are enabling it than are not.

If this was the Sinaloa there'd be daily op-eds screaming for action. Instead the #SEC give an occasional squint and move on, while otherwise #progressive people just do worse than nothing.

If you don't NEED 🍏 - that's a solid majority - don't buy it! #bethechange

Linus's genius at display here. Do you prefer working from office, or home? 🤔

There are three sections to this, in the first one, there's a photo of the Microsoft headquarters, a tall and wide building with many floors. In the second one, there's Apple's headquarters, which looks pretty much looks like a stadium or flying saucer, depending on who you ask. In the final section, there's Linus Torvalds showing off his work from home setup, with a standing desk being the key highlight.
The courts are clear: Google is a monopolist. But will that monopoly be effectively curtailed?

The ruling has been celebrated as a new dawn for the internet, but there are plenty of reasons to believe Google’s power may not be reined in as much as we hope. The fight is far from over.
