if I were the onion, I would immediately turn this loose on the community, minorities, and say, make your own satire website, and we will help you promote it under our brand! This is just amazing! Powerful words from true journalists at @ProPublica

"We face the biggest test of our professional lives. Now we get to see if we really meant it when we said we will hold power to account. Will we do so when our subjects have true power on their side and a willingness to use it? We may be harassed. We may be sued. We may be threatened with violence. We may be ignored. Are we just sunshine journalists or are we ready?"

"NPR...reported that 'more than 1,600 digital subscriptions had been cancelled less than four hours after the news broke.'

It was a reasonable impulse. But if Bezos is indeed why the Post is no longer endorsing candidates, and if people are worried about his outsize influence on our society, they should not be canceling their newspaper subscriptions. They should be canceling their Amazon Prime subscriptions."

Now to put on my least favorite hat: please subscribe to support my work! Subscriptions are pay-what-you-want, and they allow me to never paywall any of my writing.

But for some people, like me, it’s an enormously rewarding option, and I’m always happy to help others who are interested in pursuing the same dream. The price of independence may be high, but the cost of silence is even greater.

I am my publication’s writer, editor, fact-checker, software team, legal department, customer service representative, social media intern, marketing branch, accountant, and everything else. Not everyone wants to wear that many hats.

The Washington Post’s choice not to endorse a candidate is only the most recent example of a bad decision by legacy media outlets prompting people to urge their staff to quit and go independent. I love being independent, but it’s also not without its challenges.

@FreddieJ is representing The Newsmast Foundation at the Press Gazette's conference on The Future of Media Technology today!

Following the brilliant journalism conference in Perugia, Italy earlier this year, he's looking forward to another chance to dig into the challenges facing the news publishing industry and how we can help meet those challenges.

If you're there, let him know!

If you're attending #FediForum we have a surprise for you!

We've put together a Press Pack for FediForum attendees who want to know more about what we're doing and (hopefully 🤞 ) for the amazing press people attending that want to write about Channel. org and Patchwork.

If you want to see it, reach out to freddie@newsmastfoundation.org

"JD #Vance’s Combative Style Confounds Democrats but Pleases #Trump"
https://www.nytimes.com/2024/08/31/us/politics/jd-vance-trump-vp.html

The #NYTimes ( @nytimes) doesn't understand what "confounds" means. Dems are not confounded by Vance's rhetoric. They understand it but denounce, refute, and ridicule it.

By contrast. Trump and Vance are confounded by #Harris and #Walz. They're floundering for an effective line of attack.

🧵Journalists Make Choices:

We have put together recommendations for how we think the #Press should be covering the election.

Part 1: Make Threats to Democracy Clear!

Full Guidelines here:

#Journalism#Democracy#Press

1/4

Our 18 guidelines encourage newsrooms to center fact-based reporting that shifts the focus from polls and drama to candidates’ policies, past governance, behavior and capability.

The guidelines fall under three categories:

1) Treat elections like they matter more than sports scores
2) Make threats to democracy clear
3) Protect Americans from disinformation

Voters need substantive coverage of the issues, not dumb coverage of who's up and who's down.
