This is my first #Mastodon-powered fediverse server. _^

That means, https://aleph.land is one of the first and oldest Mastodon-based #Fediverse instance. _~

I occasionally log in here to keep it alive because this is historical and memorable for me. During this time, and before Mastodon was released, I was running my own Fediverse instance powered by #Hubzilla.

Back then, the protocol of the fediverse was #OpenMicroBlogging then #OStatus; #AcitivtyPub came years later.

Today, we have another federated protocol: #ATproto which is powering The #ATmosphere network (#Bluesky is just one instance).

(PS. Max chars in Aleph.Land is 1024; and using the #GlitchSoc fork since it came out.)

I compared the architectures of AT Protocol (Bluesky) and ActivityPub (Mastodon, etc.)

You can see the tradeoffs between complexity and:

  • The ability to get a global view of the network.
  • Having nothing tied to your server: your identity, moderation, and feeds being independent from your instance.
  • Avoiding individual servers being flooded with traffic.

As always, all benefits have a cost and nothing is free. Which protocol is better depends on your goals. I’m really excited for both.

At #FediForum today, we ran two sessions.

The first session brought together implementors of ActivityPub, AtProto/Bluesky, Nostr and IndieWeb applications to discuss how these protocols relate to each other, and what recommendations they all have for potential adopters who need to decide which to support.

It was a productive, cordial discussion and we will have more to say about it once FediForum publishes the notes from the meeting.

@jdickerson

#threads federation signals a very cool possible future, where news outlets run their own social media servers. like they do email servers today. articles can also be posts themselves. nobody between the journalists and the public deciding what goes viral. old school twitter without algos but much better.

the tech folks behind #mastodon #bluesky #ActivityPub#ATproto are working to lay the groundwork, but will need journalists to fully embrace this future to make it really happen.
