@pluralistic EXCELLENT article!

Have you had a look at #Nostr too? It can be bridged with #ActivityPub and it appears to be totally resistant to #enshittification by design.

A little bitcoin-bro heavy in these early days, but it can outgrow that I think.

I'm referring to the version of tech adoption cycles commonly associated with McKenna and Geoffrey Moore's books Crossing the Chasm etc.

Also, this is a multi-sided "market", so the model applies differently on the user side and the developer/vendor side. It's possible we are further along on the user side than the developer/vendor side.

@j12t@deadsuperhero

Do you think there's one more category though. I started out on the internet in the nineties, shell servers, Usenet MUDS etc.

Then I moved on the IRC, ICQ, not so much AOL, but you get my drift.

I'm just a user but I travelled many roads before My space was a Twinkle in Chris or Tom's eye.

I'm a sexagenarian craftsman, but I use #Matrix, #XMPP and #Nostr as well as #mastodon.

PWAs are not hard to switch :)

At #FediForum today, we ran two sessions.

The first session brought together implementors of ActivityPub, AtProto/Bluesky, Nostr and IndieWeb applications to discuss how these protocols relate to each other, and what recommendations they all have for potential adopters who need to decide which to support.

It was a productive, cordial discussion and we will have more to say about it once FediForum publishes the notes from the meeting.

#activitypub #bluesky #atproto #nostr #indieweb #socialweb

So on balance, I believe the Fediverse is better. I think most people here agree (otherwise why would you be here?). Even if some parts are bad. Maybe even realllly bad.

Do we have work to do? Ohhh yesssss ... on reducing harassment and many other things. Let's focus our energies on that, and -- note this advantage of the Fediverse: we can actually do the work we think needs doing, unlike with commercial social media where we just can complain and generally get ignored -- let's go!

@J12tLoved the vibes around #Nostr. Whipped up a server and was on it for a month, so I know.
  • Non judgemental crowd
  • No need to constantly look over your shoulder if you will be policed or your server will be Fediblocked because you have an unpopular opinion e.g. being a TERF or anti-LGBTQ or anti-Bitcoin or anti-Kamala or anti-Trump.
  • You don't like something or are being abused, you settle it on your own instead of shouting #Fediblock#Fediblock or going to your admins, tagging admins, and then lecturing about 'creating a safe place'.

Only downside is that it has a set of its own 'celebs'. And just as the Fediverse is littered with Democrats and its supporters, it's the reverse in Nostr - though I did stumble across a few but they were more on the nuanced side and not aggressive. Of course, too much talk of crypto, which can be nauseating.
